Wimbledon Rugby Football Club - Inclusive Rugby
Organisation/service details
Organisation details
Description of activity
Short tag rugby training and games for children who are registered as having special educational needs and disability.
These take place during our usual session for mini and youth children and some players move onto join the relevant age group but this is not expected.
The drills and games are fairly simple and they will be playing non contact rugby.
We have seen improvement in fitness, coordination, communication and behaviour in many of our players. Some arrive rugby ready and keen to show off and some hide behind their parents for a week or two. Some players have no discernable physical disabilities whereas others are significant. We're inclusive, just give it a go

Please describe how accessible the toilet area is for example is it a 'Changing Places' accessible toilet, does it have changing facilities, hoists etc
Basic accessible toilet with a drop down changing table. No hoists or other equipment.
Despite our best intentions it is not always clutter free but the more use it gets the better it will be.

Dietary needs catered for
Staff have specialist training
Please enter any further details about your accessibility / specialist support
The car park gets very busy particularly on Sunday morning. We have a few disabled spaces and a cone off a few more on Sundays but we cannot guarantee everyone a parking space. There is a ramp to the clubhouse and level access to the toilet and bar.
The sessions are run by volunteers from the club, including a deputy head teacher who ran his school's sports, a qualified SEND support worker, parents of SEND children, a social worker.

Description of eligibility or referral criteria and pathways (if applicable)
We suggest the group is for 7 to 12 year olds but we're happy for anyone to try as long as it is safe for them and others.
Siblings who do not have a disability often join in and are welcome.
You can just turn up but we prefer an email to let us know so we can look out for you.
We usually run September to the following April but are likely to start early this year i.e. 2020. Plus we occasionally run holiday camps.
Does a parent / carer need to stay on premises during activity
Please provide further details
Most parents enjoy being on the touchline.
We also have regular breaks for drinks and snacks which parents need to supervise. We do have barbecue and coffee bar open from 9.30 and drinks bar later.
Some parents get involved but it is not compulsory.
On occasion some parents need/wish to watch a sibling in a different group. This is by arrangement.
The rest of the groups run form 10 to 12 and the club remains open for all until around 2.
Is there a cost for this service or activity
Please provide further details
Currently we do not charge for these sessions.
If, (as is possible but not currently planned) we change this arrangement it will be at a lower cost than advertised for the non SEND players e.g £50 to £80 per season.
The club has a policy that nobody should not be able to pay due to financial difficulties and fees can be waived at the discretion of each age group manager.
Inclusion and accessibility
Taking part if you are a child or young person with additional needs or a disability.
How can a child or young person with SEND take part in this activity
We structure the session to suit such children. We try to keep to set routines but it can be a bit chaotic at times, especially when playing games. If necessary new players will get some 1 to 1 tuition and be assigned a buddy player.
We play a shorter session than the rest of the groups as we find most of our players get tired and we have several drink/snack breaks form the same reason.
It is quite common for some players to be facing the wrong way, wandering off, chasing their little sister, scoring at the wrong end, getting upset because they get dirty etc. Most don't do any of this and we don't encourage it but we can cope with it. The only thing we can't cope with is any behavior that puts the player or others at risk but we will try and work with such players.
